Rolling on the Mark (a text by Mattia Filice translated by Vadim Bystritski)
.
Just with my finger
I stop a train
a mass of about four hundred sixty tons
four thousand times my weight
my phalanges make grind to a halt
.
My hand on the console
resting upon its three bent fingers
the thumb keeping an equilibrium
the index encounters no resistance
like when I push a key
.
But nothing happens
the train doesn’t respond
the speed needle points at the same three digits
none of the gauges moves
the break cylinder needles remain inert
frozen at zero
.
Am I jammed?
I dump sand between the wheels and the rails
to provoke friction
I tap the emergency break button
Nothing
the buildings continue to flow by at the same rate
I pull on the direct break dashing to a break handle
crank it
the train keeps on going
thousand passengers behind me
next to me
in my mind in my consciousness in my regrets
all of us thrusting ourselves into the station
.
My last resort is the black spring blade
to soften the upcoming shock
useless desperate actions
sticking my foot out and using the bottom of my shoe
jumping out
diving under the console
.
After blade-running with my eyes closed
I’ve just opened them
the blood circulation changed the direction
I am aware of every nook and cranny of my anatomy
from the arteries down to the capillaries
all of my veins surface
transforming epidermis into a railroad map
plunging me into a swamp of suspicions
.
Up until now I was not aware
of the fact that our occupation
may offer us no respite
.
I rewind
.
A projectionist
in a movie theater without any audience
I am dismissed without warning
now at the quai
waiting for an off schedule connection
as a simple passenger
I’ll ask the ticket officer
due to inclement weather
the ticket officer is on another train that is late
the cold front bringing rain storms has invaded the south
Then one of the guys asks me
Would you like to conduct a train?
it’s only now and then that I associate this silver serpent
with a human being
piecing it all together I finally make it click into place
transitioning from an online booked trip to permanent traveling
a useful occupation and on the move
no office or settled lifestyle
a skilled worker with special technical know-how
some would call it blue collar
a funny choice for a guy whose family tend to buy
a new bike when a tire is punctured
my idea of a railroad worker
is someone with a gruff voice and a wink of an eye
not a push-over but smoking a pipe
and holding at gun-point his superior
or maybe he’s just full of it
.
like that conductor that stops his high-speed
in the middle of nowhere
with wheat fields to the right
and some fallow land to the left
leaving his boss in a lurch
and without a quai
just nature
This would make a great movie script
.
I like the idea
perhaps freedom is still possible
.
.
Rouler au trait
.
quatre cent soixante mille kilogrammes
six mille fois la mienne
que mes phalanges font stopper net
.
.
Cette idée me plait
