Sem (a text of Pierre Chopinaud translated by Vadim Bystritski)
Language dies in the writings of a language that is being born
The ruins of a destroyed city disappear in the wall of a city that has been restored and its new political order
Empire kingdom republic Eden the Fall the Ark Babel Lot’s Daughters Leviathan
.
Sem corals his oxen and horses
builds his barn and stables
To keep record of cereal and cattle he uses
a sharpened point of a rock to mark tree bark
with notches corresponding to the head count
.
His memory flows carried by wood
.
The origins of writing are no less organic than flora
Carved by a pointy rock the dwelling of writing transforms itself
.
The past form passes on to a new form
the same as the alphabet
the habitat of a represented animal
.
Between the grave and cradle loops perpetual progeny
the way the century turns and the new cycle recycles
.
Every deed involved in these seven or eight thousand years
is contained
enveloped in words
intact
in life
such as the dead of the olive grove
asleep since the times of Zachariah
ever ready to heed the enunciation
.
I’ll preserve the content
uttered at the top of the lungs
in this writing
invoking resurrection behind each punctuation mark
to travel to the times of or after Sem
Noa’s son
the arrival of the Babylonians the Hachemites the Chaldeans
the Edomites the Druzes the Assyrians
.
After four hundred generations
blood of the first flows in the last
the way a faraway star in the outer limits of the universe
sheds tonight its fragmented brightness
.
.
Empire, royaume, république, Eden, Chute, Arche, Babel,
Filles de Loth, Léviathan…
.
